Performance of a MQXF Nb<sub>3</sub>Sn Quadrupole Magnet Under Different Stress Level

In a dipole or in quadrupole accelerator magnet, the displacement of coil turns induced by electromagnetic forces can cause quenches limiting magnet performance. For this reason, an azimuthal preload is applied to avoid movements up required operational current. However, several tests showed that magnets operate with partial preload, i.e., unloading during ramp does not prevent reaching higher currents. This issue particularly relevant for Nb 3 Sn magnets, where loads filaments reach degradation limits critical order investigate impact on quench performance, MQXFS6 short model High Luminosity Upgrade was tested under pre-load at 80% sample current, 93% current 1.9 K. The then released 60%, still showing ability range 80--85% as HL-LHC project. With lower going above 90% lost, and significant training appeared 85%. When restored original value, reached few 95% (13.4 T peak field). Magnetic measurements confirm larger movement case agree finite element simulations.
